IDENTIFICATION: Dumortierite can be easy to confuse with Sodalite. The most obvious way to distinguish is in their natural shape (dumortierite being fibrous while sodalite being more amorphous) or the geological setting they are found in. However, these are polished versions, and the most obvious features for their identification have been erased.

At 7-8 out of 10 in a hardness scale, Dumortierite is harder than Sodalite (5.5-6 out of 10) and has a vitreous (glassy) luster. Sodalite, on the other hand, is softer and has a dull to greasy luster.
If you want to do a more practical test, Sodalite will get scratched by a steel knife while Dumortierite will likely scratch steel.
